Chapter Ten

“Oh my dear girl, please understand. I am not making fun. It is an honest question. Putting the pieces together sometimes requires someone with imagination who can see the big picture.”

“Well, then here is what I believe happened or something similar,” She said as she began to weave another story.

“Henry Koch spoke to the group of men sitting in the brightly lit boardroom. ‘We have been working on another way, since Butler brought down the coup in 1933.’

“‘That’s all well and good to say, but what exactly have we been successful at lately?’ Barry interrupted. ‘After all, it didn’t help me get elected did it? Now we are stuck with Lyndon Johnson. Possibly we can run Wallace one day.’

“‘Patience, Barry,” Welch cautioned. ‘You might not have gotten in, and that was unfortunate. However, we do understand now that we need to begin to put our people in more areas of government. This will take more time than we expected.’

“‘I do hope we don’t have long to wait,” Major General Walker commented.

“Welch continued, ‘I believe we can do it in our lifetime, gentlemen, but if not, at least in our children’s.’

“Koch went on, ‘we need more control of the media; we need to put education back into the private sector, and we need to have our people in all of the government offices. I believe we can even con Hollywood into helping our cause if done correctly. After all the propaganda that worked for Hitler, it may take longer in this country, because of the stupid system we have in place currently. We will have to pit one group against the other. We’ll start small with local elections and move those who believe in our goals up into the hierarchy.’

“Welch agreed firmly, ‘He is right, Barry. Our biggest problems are the unions, women, and education. Undocumented workers will help bring down costs for us until we can ship the jobs overseas. First we must set up the system so we don’t pay an arm and a leg in import taxes. Then when jobs become scarce again, we can ensure it’s the unions that will fall.’

“‘Then what?’ Barry asked.

“‘Along with all of that, we simply must take over the justice system and spark the religious zealots to fight. It will come. The morality of the Christian right-wing will be ready for us. Time is on our side.’ Walker finished.

The whip swung through the air and landed so hard on Rebecca’s back it dug deep into her tender flesh, and she awoke from her daydream.

“Well, it’s about time I got your attention,” Burrows sneered loudly.

The crowd was silent. Not a sound could be heard. A terrible, fiery agony spread across Rebecca’s back. Her flesh was in ribbons with blood soaking her back and running down her legs. The last shreds of cloth were lying in a heap on the ground covered in blood. She swooned.

“Oh no you don’t,” Burrows said. “Hose her down,” he ordered. “Today’s games aren’t over yet, especially since she didn’t make one tiny sound.
